Last checked: October 14, 2026. Before you pay an annual fee you don’t want, you usually have three options: ask for a retention offer, downgrade to a cheaper card from the same bank, or cancel. This page covers all three for the 60 personal cards I review: where each card can be downgraded and what you give up, each bank’s rules, and 285 dated retention offers that cardholders reported (including the times they got nothing), each linked to the report. I add new reports as they come in. No affiliate links, as always on Travel Summary.
Not sure the fee is worth paying in the first place? My premium card calculator shows what each premium card costs you after the credits you’d really use.
Quick Take
- Always ask before you cancel. In the 278 reports since October 2025, about half of the cardholders who asked got an offer, and several only got one on a second call or chat.
- Amex Platinum: since the $895 fee, most reported offers are 15,000 to 25,000 points after about $3,000 in spend. A few people got 50,000 points after $4,000 (mostly in October and November 2025) or a $500 credit; about half got nothing or were only offered to pay the fee with points.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve: a wave of $400, $300, $150 and $100 statement credits ran from December 2025 to February 2026, but about seven in ten reports were no offer, and several Chase reps said offers only show up before the annual fee posts. Chase’s hotel and airline cards do better: $50 credits on IHG, Hyatt and Marriott Boundless cards and $100 to $150 on United Explorer and Southwest cards come up often.
- Capital One Venture X: Capital One, long known for no retention offers, has been giving a $200 travel credit after $2,000 in spend (sometimes $100 with no spend) since October 2025.
- Bank of America: since July 2026 many cardholders see $175 after $1,500 in spend in the online close-account steps, even on no-fee cards. It’s usually one per person.
- Downgrades: 22 of the 44 cards with a fee can drop to a no-fee card from the same bank; 8 have no downgrade at all (mostly single-card airline and hotel brands). Amex Platinum and Gold can’t become Amex credit cards, and you never get a card’s welcome bonus by downgrading into it.
1. What Should You Try Before You Cancel a Card?
Check the date, ask for a retention offer, look at a downgrade, and cancel only last. The order matters, because each step closes off the one before it. Once you’ve downgraded you can’t ask for a retention offer on the old card, and once you’ve cancelled you can’t downgrade.
- Check the date. Most banks refund the full annual fee if you cancel within about 30 days of the statement that shows it (Barclays allows about 60). Several Chase reps told cardholders retention offers only appear before the fee posts, so start the conversation shortly before your renewal, not weeks after.
- Ask for a retention offer. Say the fee is hard to justify and you’re thinking of closing the card, then ask if there are any offers to keep it. Amex and Citi handle this well in chat; Chase and Capital One by phone; Bank of America shows its offer in the online close-account steps. If the first answer is no, a second try a week or two later sometimes turns one up.
- Downgrade if the offer isn’t enough. A downgrade (banks call it a product change) keeps the account open with the same credit line and history, with no credit check. Pick the card you’d actually keep, and move or use your points first if the new card can’t hold them.
- Cancel only when there’s no downgrade you’d use. Closing a card lowers your available credit, and with Amex, closing a card within a year of opening it or of accepting a retention offer can cost you the points.
Before any of this, think about the welcome bonus you might want later. Downgrading into a card never earns its bonus, and some banks treat a card you downgraded into as one you’ve had. The bank-by-bank rules are in section 4, and the full application rules are in my credit card application rules by bank.
2. Every Card’s Downgrade Options and Retention Reports
Pick a bank or search for a card. Each row shows where the card can be downgraded, what you give up, and the retention offers cardholders reported, newest first (tap See reports). You can link straight to a card, for example #card=chase-sapphire-reserve.

“Downgrade to” lists what banks have offered cardholders; options can differ by account, and banks change them without notice. A downgrade needs the card open about 12 months at Chase and Citi; at Amex, closing or downgrading within the first year can cost you the welcome bonus.
For the newest offers, check FlyerTalk. Retention offers change often, sometimes month to month, so before you call or chat, read the last page or two of FlyerTalk’s retention thread for your bank: Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One, Bank of America, Barclays. It’s generally one of the best and most up-to-date places to see what people are being offered right now, and it’s where most of the reports above come from.
3. What Retention Offers Are Cardholders Getting Now?
About half of the cardholders who asked got an offer. The most common: 15,000 to 25,000 points after about $3,000 in spend on the Amex Platinum, $200 after $2,000 on the Venture X, and $50 to $150 on Chase’s hotel and airline cards.
These are the cards with the most reports since October 2025. Reports come from people who chose to post them, so treat them as a sense of what’s possible, not a promise. Every report is listed in the card table above.
| Card | Reports | With an offer | What was offered | Latest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| American Express Platinum | 52 | 27 | Mostly 15,000 to 25,000 points after about $3,000 in spend. Best: 50,000 points after $4,000 (a few times) and a $500 credit. About half got nothing or were only offered to pay the fee with points. | Oct 8, 2026 |
| Chase Sapphire Reserve | 47 | 14 | $400, $300, $150 or $100 statement credits, mostly December 2025 to February 2026; about seven in ten got no offer. Some were only offered 25% off paying the fee with points. | Oct 9, 2026 |
| American Express Gold | 28 | 15 | Most often 15,000 points or $125 after $1,500. Bigger spenders reported 20,000 to 40,000 points or $200 to $250 credits. About half got nothing. | Aug 25, 2026 |
| Capital One Venture X | 13 | 8 | $200 Capital One Travel credit after $2,000 in 3 months, or $100 with no spend. Often only on a second call. | Sep 8, 2026 |
| Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select | 20 | 14 | Usually a $99 credit after $1,000 in 3 months. Cards that came over from Barclays got less: $50 after $1,000 or 3,000 miles after $500. | Sep 27, 2026 |
| Citi Strata Elite | 11 | 5 | 10,000 to 25,000 ThankYou points or $100, but each needs $2,000 to $4,000 in spend every month for 3 months. About half got nothing. | Oct 4, 2026 |
| Citi Strata Premier | 10 | 7 | $95 statement credit or 10,000 points, each after about $3,000 in spend. | Aug 25, 2026 |
| Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant | 11 | 4 | 20,000 points after $1,000, or a free night worth up to 50,000 points after $1,500. Most 2026 reports got nothing. | Sep 21, 2026 |
| World of Hyatt | 10 | 3 | $50 statement credit with no spend, but most got nothing. | Sep 8, 2026 |
| United Explorer | 7 | 4 | $100 or $150 statement credit; a few got nothing and downgraded to the Gateway. | Sep 8, 2026 |
| BofA Unlimited Cash Rewards | 4 | 4 | $175 after $1,500 in 90 days, offered in the online close-account steps. The same offer shows on Premium Rewards and Atmos Ascent. | Sep 28, 2026 |
| Atmos Rewards Ascent | 5 | 5 | $175 after $1,500 in 90 days, sometimes placed on another Bank of America card. | Jul 20, 2026 |
4. Downgrade and Retention Rules by Bank
These are the rules as cardholders and Doctor of Credit’s reference pages report them; banks don’t publish most of them. Where sources disagree, I say so.
4.1 American Express
- Downgrades: Only within the same family: Platinum and Gold can move to Gold or Green, but never to a credit card like Blue Cash, and Delta, Hilton and Marriott cards stay within their brand. You get a prorated refund of the old fee and pay a prorated fee on the new card. Points stay as long as you keep a Membership Rewards card open.
- Bonus later: Each card’s welcome offer is once per lifetime, and many cards have family rules: having held the Platinum blocks the Gold bonus, the Delta Reserve blocks the Delta Platinum and Gold, the Delta Platinum blocks the Gold, and the Blue Cash Preferred blocks the Everyday. Hilton cards have no family rule. If you’ll want the lower card’s bonus, apply for it before you downgrade into it; Amex’s pop-up tells you if you’re not eligible.
- Retention offers: Common on cards with a fee but not guaranteed: about half the Platinum and Gold reports here got nothing. Roughly once per card per year (a pattern cardholders see, not a published rule). If you accept one and then close or downgrade within the next 12 months, Amex can take the points back or close accounts.
- How to ask: Online chat is quickest; phone works too. Try again a week or two later if the first answer is no.
- Newest reports: FlyerTalk’s American Express (USA) retention offers 2025–2026 thread, newest posts on the last page.
- Fee refund: Full refund if you cancel within 30 days of the statement with the fee.
4.2 Chase
- Downgrades: The card usually has to be open 12 months, and you stay within the brand: Sapphire to Freedom, United to United, Southwest to Southwest, Marriott to Marriott, IHG to IHG. Phone only. No credit check, and the history and points move with you, but Ultimate Rewards points on a Freedom card can’t transfer until you combine them with a Sapphire or Ink Preferred.
- Bonus later: Downgrading never earns a bonus. Since January 2026 each Sapphire card pays its bonus once per lifetime, and it’s unclear whether holding a Sapphire through a downgrade counts (some 2026 guides still quote the old 48-month rule). Other Chase cards use the 24-month rule plus 5/24.
- Retention offers: Less common than at Amex or Citi on the Sapphire cards; the December 2025 to February 2026 Sapphire Reserve wave was the exception, and several reps said offers only appear before the fee posts. Small statement credits are routine on the co-branded cards: $50 on IHG, Hyatt and Marriott Boundless, $100 to $150 on United Explorer and Southwest.
- How to ask: Phone only; Chase has no retention chat.
- Newest reports: FlyerTalk’s Chase retention offers 2024–26 thread, newest posts on the last page.
- Fee refund: Full refund within 30 days of the statement with the fee; one reader was told 41 days from that statement’s closing date. A downgrade after that gets a prorated refund.
4.3 Citi
- Downgrades: The card has to be open 12 months. Options vary by rep: moves between AAdvantage and ThankYou cards are sometimes allowed and sometimes not. In 2026, Strata Elite holders were mostly offered AAdvantage cards or AT&T Points Plus, not the Strata Premier. ThankYou points stay on any ThankYou card, but no-fee cards transfer at 1:0.7. Cards that moved from Barclays on April 24, 2026 were told no changes in their first Citi year.
- Bonus later: Strata cards became once per lifetime in September 2026; whether a downgrade into a Strata card counts isn’t stated. AAdvantage cards keep the 48-month rule, which covers converting another Citi card into the card.
- Retention offers: Among the most generous, usually points or a statement credit after spend, and some people get new offers more than once a year. The AAdvantage Platinum Select usually gets $99 after $1,000 in 3 months; Strata Elite offers need spend every month.
- How to ask: Chat or phone; ask for the retention or account specialist team.
- Newest reports: FlyerTalk’s Citi retention offers thread, newest posts on the last page.
- Fee refund: Full refund within about 30 days of the fee posting; prorated after that.
4.4 Capital One
- Downgrades: Capital One calls every change an upgrade and only offers what’s targeted to your account; check Offers and Upgrades online, or call. Venture X holders were offered VentureOne, Venture or Quicksilver. Miles can be lost on a move to Quicksilver or Savor, so move them first. Discover cards moved to Capital One’s systems from July 27, 2026; whether they can change to Capital One cards isn’t known yet.
- Bonus later: Downgrading never earns a bonus. The Venture family has 48-month rules: a Venture X bonus in the last 48 months also blocks the Venture and VentureOne bonuses.
- Retention offers: Rare until October 2025; since then the Venture X often gets a $200 travel credit after $2,000 in spend or $100 with no spend, and the Venture sometimes gets the fee waived.
- How to ask: Phone.
- Newest reports: FlyerTalk’s Capital One retention offers (all cards) thread, newest posts on the last page.
- Fee refund: About 30 days, or one statement cycle, after the fee posts.
4.5 Bank of America
- Downgrades: Premium Rewards and Premium Rewards Elite can move to no-fee cards like Customized Cash and Unlimited Cash. Airline cards (Atmos, Air France KLM) usually can’t move to Bank of America’s own cards; some Alaska card holders have. Redeem points before you switch.
- Bonus later: Downgrading never earns a bonus. Bank of America’s 2/3/4 application rule and a 24-month rule per card apply.
- Retention offers: Since July 2026, many cardholders see $175 after $1,500 in 90 days in the online or app close-account steps (it shows before the final confirmation), even on no-fee cards. It’s usually one per person.
- How to ask: App or website: card, then Close credit card account, and stop before you submit. Or ask Erica, or call.
- Newest reports: FlyerTalk’s Bank of America retention offers and annual fee refunds thread, newest posts on the last page.
- Fee refund: Usually refunded within one statement period, but not guaranteed.
4.6 Barclays
- Downgrades: Usually allowed within a family, such as JetBlue Plus to the no-fee JetBlue card. The Wyndham Earner Premier is new (June 2026), so there are no reports yet.
- Bonus later: Barclays has historically allowed a card’s bonus again after you cancel it and wait, with no published lifetime rule. It’s sensitive to many recent new accounts.
- Retention offers: Mixed: sometimes the fee waived, more often a spend offer such as a few thousand miles after $1,000.
- How to ask: Phone.
- Newest reports: FlyerTalk’s Barclays retention offers (all cards) thread, newest posts on the last page.
- Fee refund: Full refund within about 60 days of the fee posting.
4.7 Wells Fargo
- Downgrades: Some cards can be changed, a few online. The Autograph Journey isn’t eligible for any product change, so move points to another Wells Fargo rewards card before you cancel it. The $95 Choice Privileges Select reportedly can’t change to the no-fee Choice card.
- Bonus later: Downgrading never earns a bonus; no per-card rule confirmed.
- Retention offers: The fewest reports of any major bank.
- How to ask: Phone.
- Fee refund: Reports range from 60 to 90 days.
4.8 Other Banks
- Synchrony (Virgin Red): The only Virgin Red card, with no lower version; no downgrade or retention reports found.
- Bilt (Cardless): Downgrades are allowed from Palladium to Obsidian or Blue and from Obsidian to Blue, by calling Cardless and finishing in the Bilt app, one product change per 12 months. Within 30 days of the annual fee posting, the fee is refunded but the welcome bonus is reversed; after that you keep the bonus. No retention offers reported yet (Frequent Miler, September 21, 2026; Travel on Points, September 27, 2026).
- Fidelity and SoFi: No annual fee, so there’s nothing to downgrade or waive; keep them open for your credit history.
Sources: Doctor of Credit’s bank reference pages and its annual fee refund and retention rules pages, Frequent Miler’s downgrade paths guide (September 2026), and the cardholder reports in the table above. Last checked: October 14, 2026.
5. How I Collect the Reports
- What counts: a cardholder’s own report of what they were offered (or not) when they asked to cancel or downgrade a personal card, with a date. “No offer” reports are included, because they’re half the story.
- Where they come from: the FlyerTalk retention threads for each bank, reader comments on Doctor of Credit and Frequent Miler, Reddit threads (r/ChaseSapphire, r/amex, r/CreditCards), myFICO and US Card Forum threads, and reports collected by other blogs. Each one links to the report. I leave out names.
- How far back: October 2025 onward. Older reports appear only for cards with few recent ones and are marked older. A few dates are approximate (the source showed only a month) and say so. For anything newer than my last check, the FlyerTalk threads linked in section 4 are the place to look.
- What it isn’t: a random sample. People post good offers and bad experiences more than ordinary ones, and banks target offers by account, so your offer may be different.

6. Quick Answers
Usually not. A downgrade (product change) keeps the same account, credit line and history, and there's no credit check. Cancelling closes the account and lowers your available credit, which can raise your utilization.
Shortly before or right after the annual fee posts, while you can still get a full refund: about 30 days at Amex, Chase, Citi and Capital One, and about 60 at Barclays. Several Chase reps said offers only appear before the fee posts.
In reports since the $895 fee, most offers were 15,000 to 25,000 Membership Rewards points after about $3,000 in spend. A few people got 50,000 points after $4,000 or a $500 credit, while about half got nothing or were only offered to pay the fee with points.
No. Downgrading into a card never earns its bonus, and Amex counts it as a card you've had, which can block the bonus later. If you'll want the lower card's bonus, apply for it first and then downgrade or cancel the other card.
Now it does, sometimes. Since October 2025, Venture X holders have reported a $200 travel credit after $2,000 in spend in 3 months, or $100 with no spend, often only on a second call. Others were offered a downgrade instead.
No. The Platinum can only move to the Gold or the Green (now Classic Green), which both have annual fees. To get to a no-fee Amex card you'd have to apply for one and close the Platinum.
