The Delta SkyMiles Reserve is Amex’s top personal Delta card: a $650 annual fee, 15 Delta Sky Club visits a year plus Centurion Lounge access on Delta flights, a companion certificate that works in First, upgrade priority, a $2,500 MQD Headstart, and Resy, rideshare and Delta Stays credits.
Since the 2025 visit cap it’s a card for people who are in Delta airports often but not every week. Below is how it earns, what each credit takes, the exact lounge rules from Amex’s terms, the insurance, the application rules, and my verdict.
Delta Reserve Amex at a glance
- Annual fee: $650; $175 for each additional Reserve card
- Current public offer: 50,000 miles plus two round-trip Delta Comfort flight certificates after $10,000 in purchases in the first 6 months (offer ends November 4, 2026) (as of October 14, 2026, per Frequent Miler)
- Is it the best ever?: No. It was 125,000 miles after $6,000 until October 2025. The certificates are for Delta Comfort round trips within the 48 contiguous states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, need a 21+ day advance purchase, cost up to $80 per person in taxes and fees, and (per Frequent Miler) must be used by January 15, 2028.
- Foreign transaction fee: None
- Best for: People who fly Delta often enough to use 15 Sky Club visits a year, value upgrade priority and a companion certificate that works in First, and can use the Resy credit without changing their habits.
- Skip it if: You fly Delta a few times a year or mostly on Basic fares (no Sky Club access on Basic). The Amex Platinum covers more lounges, and the Delta Platinum gets you the companion certificate for $350.

How it earns
| Category | Rate | Caps and fine print |
|---|---|---|
| Delta flights and Delta Vacations bought directly from Delta | 3x | No cap stated. |
| Everything else | 1x | No cap. |
There are no bonus categories outside Delta, so this isn’t a card for everyday spending, except to work toward MQDs ($1 MQD per $10 spent) or the $75,000 that unlocks unlimited Sky Club visits. SkyMiles don’t expire; Pay with Miles gives exactly 1 cent each, and TakeOff 15 takes 15% off Delta award flights.
Credits and how to use them
The Resy and rideshare credits are monthly, so they only add up if you use them every month.
| Credit | Amount | How often | Where / how | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resy credit | Up to $20 a month ($240 a year) | Monthly | Eligible purchases at 10,000+ U.S. Resy restaurants; enrollment and a Resy account required | Only restaurants on Resy, and an unused month is gone. |
| Rideshare credit | Up to $10 a month ($120 a year) | Monthly | U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers; enrollment required | Easy if you already take a ride a month. |
| Delta Stays credit | Up to $200 | Calendar year | Prepaid hotels or vacation rentals booked through Delta Stays on delta.com | Only on Delta’s own hotel booking site, and prepaid rates are often non-refundable. |
| Global Entry or TSA PreCheck | $120 or up to $85 | Once every 4 years | Pay the application fee with the card | — |
| In-flight purchases | 20% back | Per purchase | Food and drinks bought on Delta flights with the card | Small, but automatic. |
| Venue Collection | 10% back, up to $250 | Calendar year | Concessions at participating stadiums and arenas; enroll one card | Only if you go to those venues. |
Lounges, companion certificate and other perks
- Top tier for Delta flyers: 15 Delta Sky Club visits each year (issued February 1, expiring January 31) when flying Delta, more than the 10 a year on the Amex Platinum, the only other card I review with Sky Club access. A visit is 24 hours of access to any number of Sky Clubs starting at your first entry, Basic Economy tickets don’t get in, and extra visits cost $50. Spending $75,000 on the card in a calendar year unlocks unlimited visits.
- Sky Club guests: you can bring up to two guests (or your immediate family) for $50 per person per visit, and the primary cardholder gets four free one-time guest passes each year. Additional Reserve cardholders get their own 15 visits.
- The Centurion Lounge and Sidecar by The Centurion Lounge when you’re flying a same-day Delta-marketed or Delta-operated flight booked with a U.S. Amex card; up to two guests at $50 each ($30 for children 2 to 17), and they have to be on your flight. Amex’s terms also include Escape Lounges on the same basis.
- Companion certificate each year after renewal: a round-trip Delta First, Comfort or Main ticket for a companion within the U.S. and to Mexico, the Caribbean or Central America; you pay the taxes and fees ($22 to $250). Delta Basic fares don’t qualify, and you don’t get one in year one.
- Upgrade priority ahead of others with the same Medallion tier and fare, and a spot on the Complimentary Upgrade List (after Medallion members) if you’re not a Medallion member.
- MQD Headstart: $2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars each year, halfway to Silver Medallion, plus $1 MQD for every $10 you spend on the card.
- First checked bag free on Delta flights worldwide, second checked bag free on domestic Delta flights, and Zone 5 boarding.
- Hertz President’s Circle status (enroll in Hertz Gold Plus and at delta.com/hertz), Global Dining Access by Resy (harder-to-get reservations at Resy restaurants), and the Premium Global Assist Hotline.
Insurance and protections
| Benefit | What the bank says |
|---|---|
| Trip delay | Up to $500 per trip after a delay of more than 6 hours, max 2 claims per card per 12 months (6 hours ties the shortest wait of the cards I review, but the round-trip rule makes it harder to use than Chase’s or Capital One’s) One-way and award tickets: One-ways only as part of a round trip: Amex’s terms require round-trip travel paid entirely with the card; it can be made of one-way tickets, but a trip with no return isn’t covered. Award tickets: the terms let you pay with the card in combination with points, so award taxes paid on the card should count (The Points Guy reads it the same way). |
| Trip cancellation / interruption | Up to $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per card per 12 months for non-refundable expenses One-way and award tickets: Same rule: a round trip (one-way tickets are fine if you return to where you started) paid with the card, alone or combined with points; the terms don’t address award taxes directly, but The Points Guy says paying them on the card should provide coverage. |
| Lost luggage (Baggage Insurance Plan) | Up to $1,250 for carry-on and $500 for checked bags that are lost, damaged or stolen, above what the airline pays One-way and award tickets: One-ways are fine: the plan needs the Entire Fare of the ticket on the card, with no round-trip rule. Award tickets probably don’t count, because paying only the taxes isn’t the entire fare (The Points Guy reads Amex’s “Entire Fare” wording the same way). |
| Cell phone protection | Up to $800 per claim, 2 claims per 12 months, $50 deductible, when the prior month’s wireless bill was paid with the card |
| Car rental loss and damage | Secondary coverage for damage or theft when you decline the rental company’s CDW; not available in Australia, Italy or New Zealand, and no liability coverage |
| Purchase protection | Theft, accidental damage or loss within 90 days, up to $10,000 per purchase and $50,000 per calendar year |
| Return protection | Within 90 days if the store won’t take it back, up to $300 per item and $1,000 per calendar year (U.S. purchases) |
| Extended warranty | Up to one extra year on U.S. warranties of 5 years or less |
Amounts are from Amex’s card page, checked October 14, 2026; trip delay and trip cancellation are insured by New Hampshire Insurance Company (AIG). Neither the card page nor the terms list baggage delay coverage.

Application rules for this card
- The bonus is generally once per lifetime: Amex’s terms say you may not be eligible if you have or have had this card (the Amex lifetime rule). Amex shows a pop-up before any hard pull if you’re not eligible, so you can withdraw without a credit inquiry.
- Delta family rule: the Reserve is only blocked by itself, so holding the Gold or Platinum doesn’t affect it. Having the Reserve does block the Gold’s and Platinum’s bonuses, so get those first if you want them.
- No-lifetime-language offers: Doctor of Credit tracks targeted Delta links without the lifetime language; a December 2025 round included the Reserve, but its latest update (September 2026) only listed the Gold and Platinum (Doctor of Credit).
- Amex generally limits you to 5 Amex credit cards at once and approves about 1 credit card every 5 days and 2 every 90 days (Amex rules).
The full rules for every bank are in my credit card application rules guide.
My take
A $650 fee, and only the $120 rideshare credit is close to automatic for most people, which leaves $530 in my eyes; if you’d also eat at Resy restaurants every month anyway, the $240 Resy credit brings it to about $290. The Delta Stays credit I wouldn’t count. That has to be covered by the Sky Club visits, the companion certificate and the upgrade priority.
It can be: 15 Sky Club visits are worth something like $750 if you’d otherwise pay $50 a visit, and a First Class companion ticket on a domestic route can be worth more than the fee by itself. But since the 2025 visit cap, very frequent flyers run out of visits unless they spend $75,000 a year on a 1x card, and occasional flyers don’t use enough of them, so the sweet spot is people who fly Delta every month or so. For lounges beyond Delta, the Amex Platinum covers far more of them.
In any case, I personally would hate to sign up at 50,000 miles and two Comfort certificates when 125,000 miles was available in the past, especially with a $10,000 spending requirement.
The catch
Sky Club access went from unlimited to 15 visits a year in 2025, Basic Economy tickets don’t get in at all, guests cost $50 each beyond the four passes, and unlimited visits need $75,000 a year in spending on a card that earns 1x outside Delta.
The companion certificate only arrives after your first renewal, fare availability for it varies a lot, and the current welcome certificates are limited to Comfort round trips in the lower 48, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands with a 21-day advance purchase. Earning is 1x on everything that isn’t Delta, which is weak for a $650 card.
The Resy, rideshare and Delta Stays credits only help if you already spend there. Amex, like other banks with similar hard-to-use credits, is counting on people forgetting to use them.
Keep it after year one?
The fee to me is $650 minus the $120 rideshare credit, which equals $530, or about $290 if you’d use the full $240 Resy credit without changing your habits. If you’ll use most of your 15 Sky Club visits and the companion certificate every year, it’s worth keeping. If you won’t, ask Amex to move you down rather than cancel: Frequent Miler lists the Delta Platinum, Delta Gold and no-fee Delta Blue as downgrade options, and the Platinum keeps a (Main Cabin) companion certificate for $350.
