Card benefits change often, and this page may be out of date by the time you read it. Always check the bank’s page and your card’s guide to benefits for the current terms before you rely on a benefit.

The AAdvantage Platinum Select is Citi’s basic American Airlines card: a $99 annual fee waived the first year, a free first checked bag and preferred boarding on domestic American flights for you and up to 4 companions, and 2x on American, restaurants and gas.

The welcome bonus is the main reason to get it, and the best version of it usually comes through an in-flight or airport link. Below is how it earns, what the perks are worth, the 48-month bonus rule, and my verdict.

Citi AA Platinum Select at a glance

  • Annual fee: $99 (waived the first year); waived the first year; no authorized user fee listed
  • Current public offer: 80,000 AAdvantage miles after $3,500 in purchases in the first 4 months, first year’s fee waived (as of October 14, 2026, per Doctor of Credit)
  • Is it the best ever?: Close. 80,000 is as many miles as it has offered, but until June 2026 the same 80,000 came with only $1,000 of spend. Doctor of Credit lists it through the in-flight/airport application links (you don’t need to be in the air; the in-flight page takes the code 000000), and Citi’s public link has also shown it.
  • Foreign transaction fee: None
  • Best for: Anyone who flies American a few times a year with a checked bag, and anyone who wants a big first-year bonus on a card that costs nothing the first year.
  • Skip it if: You rarely fly American or never check a bag; after year one there’s little reason to pay $99.
  • Bank’s page: AAdvantage Platinum Select on citi.com

Credits and how to use them

CreditAmountHow oftenWhere / howThe catch
American Airlines flight discount$125Each card yearSpend $20,000+ in purchases in your card year and renew the cardA lot of spend for $125; at 2x or 1x that spend is better on a card that earns more.
Turo credit$30 per trip, up to $180Calendar yearLink the card at Turo.com/AAdvantagePlatinum and pay for completed Turo trips with itOnly if you rent cars on Turo; virtual card numbers and digital wallets (Apple Pay) don’t count. Citi’s card page lists it per calendar year, but an older Citi landing page dated it October 19, 2025 to October 18, 2026, so check it’s still live before you count on it.

Perks

  • First checked bag free on domestic itineraries marketed and operated by American, for you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation. Your AAdvantage number has to be on the reservation (7 days before travel for new accounts).
  • Preferred boarding for you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation, which means earlier access to overhead bins.
  • 25% savings on inflight food and beverage purchases on American flights.
  • No lounge access; American points you to the AAdvantage Executive for Admirals Club membership.

Insurance and protections

Citi’s page lists no travel insurance for this card, so book trips with a card that has it.

Application rules for this card

  • The bonus isn’t available if you’ve received a Platinum Select bonus in the last 48 months, or converted another Citi card that earned a bonus in the last 48 months into a Platinum Select. Each AAdvantage card has its own 48-month clock, so the Executive or Globe don’t block it. (The Strata cards moved to once per lifetime in September 2026; the AAdvantage cards haven’t.)
  • Citi’s velocity rules apply: generally 1 Citi application every 8 days and no more than 2 in 65 days (Citi rules).

The full rules for every bank are in my credit card application rules guide.

My take

80,000 miles with the first year free is about as good as this card gets, and the spend is modest. There are no easy credits, so the real fee is $0 the first year and $99 after that, and the checked bag is what has to pay for it.

Earning is weak (2x in a few categories, 1x elsewhere), so this is a bonus-and-bags card, not an everyday card. In my eyes, the bonus is the point.

The catch

The best offer usually only shows up through the in-flight or airport links, not always Citi’s main site. There’s no travel insurance at all, and the $125 flight discount needs $20,000 of spend and a renewal.

The Turo credit only helps if you already rent on Turo. Citi, like other banks with credits like this, counts on people forgetting to use them.

Keep it after year one?

The fee to me is $99 from year two with no easy credits, so keep it only if you check bags on American a few times a year (the free bag for you and companions covers the fee quickly). Otherwise, ask Citi to move you to the no-fee AAdvantage MileUp before the fee posts; changes within the AAdvantage family have generally worked, though reports vary (Frequent Miler, February 2026).

Quick Answers

What is the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select annual fee?

$99 a year, waived for the first 12 months, as of October 2026.

What is the current Platinum Select bonus?

As of October 14, 2026 Doctor of Credit lists 80,000 AAdvantage miles after $3,500 in purchases in the first 4 months, mainly through the in-flight/airport application links.

Does the Platinum Select give free checked bags?

Yes. Your first checked bag is free on domestic American itineraries for you and up to 4 companions on the same reservation, as long as your AAdvantage number is on it.

Does the Platinum Select have travel insurance?

No. Citi lists no trip delay, trip cancellation, baggage or rental car coverage for this card.

Can I get the Platinum Select bonus if I have the AAdvantage Executive?

Yes. The 48-month rule is per card, so having the Executive or the Globe doesn’t block the Platinum Select bonus.
