Wells Fargo Active Cash card

Card benefits change often, and this page may be out of date by the time you read it. Always check the bank’s page and your card’s guide to benefits for the current terms before you rely on a benefit.

The Active Cash is Wells Fargo’s flat-rate card: unlimited 2% cash rewards on purchases, no categories to track, no annual fee, up to $600 of cell phone protection, and a 0% intro APR for 12 months.

It’s one of the simplest good cards you can get, and if you also hold an Autograph Journey you can move its rewards there and transfer them to airlines. Below is how it earns, what’s covered, the offer (sources disagree right now), and my verdict.

WF Active Cash at a glance

  • Annual fee: $0
  • Current public offer: $200 cash rewards after $1,500 in purchases in the first 6 months (as of October 14, 2026, per Doctor of Credit)
  • Is it the best ever?: Sources disagree: Doctor of Credit lists $200, but Wells Fargo’s own page and Frequent Miler show $100 after $500 in 3 months on October 14, 2026. If you only see $100, the $200 may have ended, and I’d wait for it to come back since it has been the usual offer.
  • Foreign transaction fee: 3% of each foreign purchase
  • Best for: Anyone who wants one no-fee card for everyday spending at 2%, pays their phone bill with it, and ideally pairs it with an Autograph Journey to make the rewards transferable.
  • Skip it if: You spend abroad (the 3% foreign transaction fee wipes out the 2%), or you already have a 2% card you like.
  • Bank’s page: Active Cash on wellsfargo.com

  • Cell phone protection up to $600 per claim ($25 deductible) when you pay your phone bill with the card
  • No annual fee; 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers made within 120 days
  • Secondary rental car coverage, Visa Signature Concierge and Luxury Hotel Collection
  • 3% foreign transaction fee, so leave it at home when you travel abroad

How it earns

CategoryRateCaps and fine print
All purchases2%No cap; cash advances, balance transfers, gift card and money-order purchases, and gambling don’t earn

Rewards don’t expire while the account is open. You can redeem them as a statement credit, toward a past purchase ($1 minimum), at PayPal checkout, for gift cards, or as a credit to a Wells Fargo account. If you also have an Autograph Journey, you can combine the rewards into it manually and transfer them to its 10 airline and hotel partners (my transfer partners guide); Wells Fargo’s page doesn’t mention this, so it’s per Frequent Miler.

Perks

  • Visa Signature Concierge, free 24/7 for event tickets, travel bookings and dinner reservations.
  • Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection: book select luxury hotels through Visa’s site or concierge to get extra perks at those properties, such as room upgrades when available.
  • Roadside Dispatch (pay per use, no membership needed), travel and emergency assistance, and My Wells Fargo Deals (cash-back offers at merchants).
  • Credit Close-Up, Wells Fargo’s free FICO score tool.
  • No travel credits, lounges or status.

Application rules for this card

  • You may not get the bonus if you have this card or opened one in the last 48 months, even if it’s closed with a $0 balance (Wells Fargo’s card page wording).
  • You may not be approved for another Wells Fargo-branded consumer card if you opened one in the last 4 months, so space it out from an Autograph Journey (Wells Fargo rules).
  • Like any personal card, it counts toward Chase’s 5/24 rule.

The full rules for every bank are in my credit card application rules guide.

My take

2% everywhere, no fee, and $600 of phone protection make this a plain, good catch-all. The real fee is zero, so it’s mostly a question of whether 2% beats what you’d otherwise put your everyday spending on.

Where it gets better is paired with an Autograph Journey: move the rewards there and that 2% becomes 2 transferable points per dollar, which can be worth more than 2 cents on airlines like Flying Blue or Avianca.

The one thing I’d watch is the 3% foreign transaction fee, which makes it a bad card to use outside the U.S.

The catch

A 3% foreign transaction fee, when several of the cards I review charge none, so it can’t be your travel card. The rental car coverage is secondary and there’s no travel insurance.

The bonus is small, and right now it’s $200 or $100 depending on where you look, so check which offer you’re getting before you apply.

Keep it after year one?

The fee is $0, so the real fee is $0. Yes, keep it as your 2% catch-all, and keep paying your phone bill with it for the coverage. If you have an Autograph Journey, it’s the card that feeds it.
