The Delta SkyMiles Platinum is the middle of Amex’s three personal Delta cards: a $350 annual fee, a companion certificate every year after renewal (a second Main Cabin round trip where you pay only the taxes), free checked bags, a $2,500 MQD Headstart toward Medallion status, and three monthly or yearly credits.
It has no lounge access, so the companion certificate is what decides it. Below is how it earns, what each credit takes, the insurance in Amex’s own numbers, the Delta family rules, and my verdict on who should keep it.
Delta Platinum Amex at a glance
- Annual fee: $350; No fee for additional cards
- Current public offer: As high as 90,000 miles plus a $300 statement credit after $4,000 in purchases in the first 6 months (offer ends November 4, 2026) (as of October 14, 2026, per Frequent Miler)
- Is it the best ever?: Yes, as far as I’ve tracked: the 90,000-mile offer that ended in April 2026 didn’t include the $300 credit. “As high as” means Amex may show you fewer miles; it tells you the exact number before you accept the card.
- Foreign transaction fee: None
- Best for: Delta flyers who’ll use the companion certificate every year on a Main Cabin round trip within the U.S., Caribbean or Central America, and who are chasing Medallion status with the $2,500 MQD Headstart.
- Skip it if: You fly alone or rarely fly Delta. Without the companion certificate this is a $350 card with $10 monthly credits and no lounge access.

How it earns
| Category | Rate | Caps and fine print |
|---|---|---|
| Purchases made directly with Delta | 3x | Delta flights and Delta Vacations bought directly from Delta. No cap stated. |
| Hotels booked directly with the hotel | 3x | Direct bookings only. No cap stated. |
| Restaurants | 2x | Worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S. |
| U.S. supermarkets | 2x | U.S. only. |
| Everything else | 1x | — |
SkyMiles don’t expire, but Delta prices awards dynamically, so they don’t have a fixed value. Pay with Miles gives exactly 1 cent each ($50 off per 5,000 miles), and TakeOff 15 makes Delta award flights 15% cheaper. Card spending also earns MQDs: $1 for every $20 spent, on top of the $2,500 Headstart.
Credits and how to use them
The companion certificate is the big one (it’s under perks); these credits are smaller and mostly monthly.
| Credit | Amount | How often | Where / how | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare credit | Up to $10 a month ($120 a year) | Monthly | U.S. rideshare purchases with select providers; enrollment required | Easy if you already take a ride a month; an unused month is gone. |
| Resy credit | Up to $10 a month ($120 a year) | Monthly | Eligible purchases at 10,000+ U.S. Resy restaurants; enrollment required | Only restaurants on Resy, and only $10 at a time, so it takes a Resy dinner every month to get it all. |
| Delta Stays credit | Up to $150 | Calendar year | Prepaid hotels or vacation rentals booked through Delta Stays on delta.com | Only on Delta’s own hotel booking site, and prepaid rates are often non-refundable. |
| Global Entry or TSA PreCheck | $120 or up to $85 | Once every 4 years | Pay the application fee with the card | — |
| In-flight purchases | 20% back | Per purchase | Food and drinks bought on Delta flights with the card | Small, but automatic. |
| Venue Collection | 10% back, up to $250 | Calendar year | Concessions at participating stadiums and arenas; enroll one card | Only if you go to those venues. |
Companion certificate and other perks
- Top tier: the companion certificate. Each year after renewal you get a round-trip Delta Main Cabin ticket for a companion within the domestic U.S., the Caribbean or Central America, and you pay only the government taxes and fees ($22 to $250 for up to four segments); that beats the $99-plus-taxes companion fares on the Alaska Atmos Ascent and the Citi AAdvantage Globe. Delta Basic fares don’t qualify, it can also go toward the flight part of a Delta Vacations package, and it’s issued in your renewal month, so you don’t get one in year one.
- No airport lounge access: Amex’s page says so and points to the Delta Reserve for Delta Sky Club access.
- MQD Headstart: $2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars each Medallion Qualification Year, halfway to Silver Medallion ($5,000), plus $1 MQD for every $20 you spend on the card.
- First checked bag free on Delta flights worldwide, and a second checked bag free on domestic Delta flights.
- Zone 5 priority boarding, and a spot on the Complimentary Upgrade List (behind Medallion members and Reserve cardholders) if you’re not a Medallion member.
- Hertz Five Star status: enroll in Hertz Gold Plus, add the number to your SkyMiles account and enroll at delta.com/hertz.
- TakeOff 15 (15% off Delta award flights booked on delta.com or the app, not partner flights or taxes) and Pay with Miles ($50 off per 5,000 miles).
- Global Assist Hotline, Amex presale tickets and Send & Split.
Insurance and protections
| Benefit | What the bank says |
|---|---|
| Trip delay | Up to $300 per trip after a delay of more than 12 hours, max 2 claims per card per 12 months One-way and award tickets: One-ways only as part of a round trip: Amex’s terms require round-trip travel paid entirely with the card; it can be made of one-way tickets, but a trip with no return isn’t covered. Award tickets: the terms let you pay with the card in combination with points, so award taxes paid on the card should count (The Points Guy reads it the same way). |
| Trip cancellation / interruption | None listed |
| Lost luggage (Baggage Insurance Plan) | Up to $1,250 for carry-on and $500 for checked bags that are lost, damaged or stolen, above what the airline pays One-way and award tickets: One-ways are fine: the plan needs the Entire Fare of the ticket on the card, with no round-trip rule. Award tickets probably don’t count, because paying only the taxes isn’t the entire fare (The Points Guy reads Amex’s “Entire Fare” wording the same way). |
| Cell phone protection | Up to $800 per claim, 2 claims per 12 months, $50 deductible, when the prior month’s wireless bill was paid with the card |
| Car rental loss and damage | Secondary coverage for damage or theft when you decline the rental company’s CDW; not available in Australia, Italy or New Zealand, and no liability coverage |
| Purchase protection | Theft or accidental damage within 90 days, up to $1,000 per purchase and $50,000 per calendar year |
| Extended warranty | Up to one extra year on U.S. warranties of 5 years or less |
Amounts are from Amex’s card page, checked October 14, 2026; trip delay is insured by New Hampshire Insurance Company (AIG), and the round-trip definition comes from Amex’s trip delay terms. The Delta Reserve has the stronger version (6 hours, $500) and adds trip cancellation.
For how this compares with other cards, see my card travel benefits comparison.
Application rules for this card
- The bonus is generally once per lifetime: Amex’s terms say you may not be eligible if you have or have had this card (the Amex lifetime rule). Amex shows a pop-up before any hard pull if you’re not eligible, so you can withdraw without a credit inquiry.
- Delta family rule: the Platinum’s terms also block the bonus if you have or have had the Delta SkyMiles Reserve. Having the Gold doesn’t block the Platinum, but having the Platinum does block the Gold, so the order that keeps every bonus available is Gold, then Platinum, then Reserve.
- No-lifetime-language offers: Doctor of Credit tracks Delta links without the lifetime language. Its most recent update (September 21, 2026) showed 90,000 miles + $300 on the Platinum, the same as the public offer, after an earlier 75,000 + $200 version; the post is now marked expired and these are YMMV, but they’re the way back to a bonus if you’ve already had the card (Doctor of Credit).
- Amex generally limits you to 5 Amex credit cards at once and approves about 1 credit card every 5 days and 2 every 90 days (Amex rules).
The full rules for every bank are in my credit card application rules guide.
My take
In my eyes the Platinum is a companion-certificate card with some credits attached. The certificate alone can be worth more than the $350 fee if you’d otherwise buy a second Main Cabin ticket for a partner or family member each year, and it only costs the taxes ($22 and up), which is better than the $99 companion fares other airline cards charge.
The fee math: $350 minus the $120 rideshare credit (if you already ride once a month) is $230, and I’d only count the $120 Resy and $150 Delta Stays credits if you’d use them without changing your habits. The certificate has to cover that $230, so it works for couples who fly Delta domestically every year and not for solo travelers. The $2,500 MQD Headstart is a nice extra if you’re close to Silver Medallion.
The current 90,000 miles + $300 statement credit (through November 4, 2026) is the best I’ve seen on this card, so if you want it, now is a good time, as long as you get the Gold first if you’ll ever want the Gold’s bonus.
The catch
There’s no companion certificate in year one (it comes after your first renewal), it only covers Main Cabin (no Comfort or First), Delta Basic fares don’t qualify, and some people have trouble finding fares that work, so the value varies a lot from year to year.
Trip delay needs a 12-hour delay and a round trip paid on the card, there’s no trip cancellation coverage, and there’s no lounge access at all. The Resy and rideshare credits are $10 monthly drips and the Delta Stays credit only works on Delta’s own hotel site.
Those credits only help if you already spend there. Amex, like other banks with similar hard-to-use credits, is counting on people forgetting to use them.
Keep it after year one?
The fee to me is $350 minus the $120 rideshare credit (if you’d use it every month anyway), which equals $230. If the companion certificate saves you more than $230 on a ticket you’d buy anyway, keep it. If you won’t use the certificate this year, ask Amex to move you down: Frequent Miler lists the Delta Gold ($150) and the no-fee Delta Blue as downgrade options for the Platinum, keeping in mind the lifetime language if you ever want those cards’ bonuses.

Quick Answers
$350 a year, with no fee for additional cards, as of October 2026. It isn’t waived the first year.
As of October 14, 2026 the public offer is as high as 90,000 miles plus a $300 statement credit after $4,000 in purchases in the first 6 months, through November 4, 2026.
Each year after your card renews, you get a certificate for a companion’s round-trip Delta Main Cabin ticket within the domestic U.S., the Caribbean or Central America when you buy your own ticket. You pay the companion’s taxes and fees, $22 to $250. Delta Basic fares don’t qualify.
No. Amex’s page says the Platinum has no lounge access. The Delta Reserve is the Delta card with Sky Club visits.
Yes. The Platinum’s terms only block the bonus if you have or have had the Platinum or the Reserve, so a Gold doesn’t get in the way. The reverse isn’t true: the Gold’s bonus is blocked once you’ve had the Platinum.
