Card benefits change often, and this page may be out of date by the time you read it. Always check the bank’s page and your card’s guide to benefits for the current terms before you rely on a benefit.

The Gold Card is American Express’s everyday-spending card: a $325 annual fee, 4x Membership Rewards points at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets, 3x on flights, and a handful of monthly and half-year credits for Uber, food delivery, Resy restaurants and Dunkin’.

It has no lounge access and only a few travel protections, so its value comes from the points you earn on food and from whether you’d use the credits anyway. Below is how it earns, what each credit takes, the protections in Amex’s own numbers, and my verdict.

Amex Gold at a glance

  • Annual fee: $325; no fee for the first 5 Additional Cards, then $35 each
  • Current public offer: As high as 100,000 Membership Rewards points after $8,000 in purchases in the first 6 months (as of October 14, 2026, per Frequent Miler)
  • Is it the best ever?: Close. 100,000 points is the most it has offered, but a 2024 referral offer paired 100,000 points with 20% back at restaurants for a lower $6,000 spend, and “as high as” means Amex shows some applicants less, so check what you’re offered before you accept.
  • Foreign transaction fee: None
  • Best for: Households that spend a lot at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets and want transferable points, and who already use Uber or Resy so that some of the credits get used without changing their habits.
  • Skip it if: Most of your grocery shopping is at Walmart, Target or Costco (they don’t earn 4x), or you’d rather have cash back; the Blue Cash Preferred pays 6% at U.S. supermarkets for $95.

No card I review earns transferable points faster on both dining and groceries: the Citi Strata Premier and the Aeroplan card stop at 3x, and the hotel cards that pay 4x or more earn hotel points worth much less. Membership Rewards are worth 1 cent each on flights booked with Pay with Points through Amex Travel; transferring them to airline partners is usually worth more.

Credits and how to use them

Amex markets $500+ a year in value. Here’s what each piece takes. Enrollment means you turn the credit on in your Amex account (or app) before you spend; purchases made before you enroll don’t count. If you also hold a Platinum, the two cards’ Resy credits are separate, so each one pays back Resy purchases made with that card.

CreditAmountHow oftenWhere / howThe catch
Uber Cash$10 a month ($120 a year)MonthlyAdd the Gold Card to your Uber account; U.S. rides and Uber Eats orders when you pay with an Amex cardEach month’s Uber Cash disappears if you don’t use it that month. Easy if you use Uber or Uber Eats at all.
Resy credit$50 + $50 ($100 a year)January–June and July–DecemberEligible purchases at 10,000+ U.S. Resy restaurants; enrollment requiredFairly easy if you eat at a Resy restaurant twice a year; harder in smaller towns.

The Hotel Collection property credit$100 per stayEach eligible bookingHotel Collection stays of 2+ nights booked through Amex TravelIt’s an on-property credit (food, spa and similar charges that vary by hotel), not cash back, and the hotels’ prepaid rates aren’t always the cheapest.

Perks

  • No airport lounge access: Amex’s page says so directly and points you to the Platinum or the Delta Reserve for that.
  • What’s The Hotel Collection? It’s a set of 1,300+ upscale hotels you book through Amex Travel; stays of two nights or more come with a $100 credit toward eligible on-property charges (which vary by hotel).
  • What’s Hertz Five Star? It’s a mid-level status in Hertz’s rental program; it generally means a dedicated counter or skipping the counter at many locations and a vehicle upgrade when available. Enrollment required.
  • Venue Collection: dedicated entrances or fast lanes at select stadiums and arenas, plus 10% back on concessions there (up to $250 a year).
  • Amex presale and reserved tickets for select concerts and sports events.
  • Global Assist Hotline for emergencies more than 100 miles from home (it coordinates help, but you pay for the services it arranges).

Insurance and protections

BenefitWhat the bank says
Trip delayUp to $300 per trip after a delay of more than 12 hours, max 2 claims per card per 12 months
One-way and award tickets: One-ways only as part of a round trip: Amex’s terms require round-trip travel paid entirely with the card; it can be made of one-way tickets, but a trip with no return isn’t covered. Award tickets: Amex’s terms allow paying with the card combined with points or frequent flyer awards, and The Points Guy says award tickets are covered when the taxes and fees go on an eligible card.
Lost, damaged or stolen baggageUp to $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags, on top of what the airline pays ($10,000 aggregate per trip for New York residents)
One-way and award tickets: One-ways yes: there’s no round-trip rule, but the entire fare has to be on the card. Award tickets no: paying only the taxes and fees doesn’t meet the entire-fare rule, and Amex’s baggage terms say flights booked with miles don’t qualify.
Trip cancellation / interruptionNone (that’s a Platinum benefit)
Car rental loss and damageSecondary coverage for damage or theft when you decline the rental company’s CDW; not available in Australia, Italy or New Zealand, and no liability coverage
Purchase protectionAccidental damage, theft or loss within 90 days, up to $10,000 per purchase and $50,000 per calendar year
Extended warrantyUp to one extra year on warranties of 5 years or less, up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per year
Cell phone and return protectionNone

The round-trip and award-ticket rules come from Amex’s trip delay terms (coverage by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG company), The Points Guy, and Amex’s baggage terms as quoted by Your Mileage May Vary.

Transfer partners

Membership Rewards transfer to 20 airline and hotel partners, including ANA, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and Delta, with frequent transfer bonuses; the hotel partners are weak, so I treat Amex points as a flights currency. Ratios and transfer times for every partner are in my transfer partners guide.

Application rules for this card

  • The bonus is generally once per lifetime on this card: Amex’s terms say you may not be eligible if you have or have had the Gold Card or its older Premier Rewards Gold version (the Amex lifetime rule). Amex shows a pop-up before any hard pull if you’re not eligible, so you can withdraw without a credit inquiry.
  • Family rule: the Gold’s terms also block the bonus if you have or have had any Platinum Card (including the Schwab and Morgan Stanley versions), so if you want both, get the Gold first.
  • The Gold is a charge card, so it doesn’t count toward Amex’s limit of 5 credit cards or the 1-credit-card-every-5-days and 2-every-90-days limits (Amex rules).

The full rules for every bank are in my credit card application rules guide.

My take

A $325 fee, but $120 of Uber Cash and the $100 Resy credit are easy for most people who eat out, which makes it about $105 in my eyes. At 4x, someone who spends $1,000 a month on restaurants and groceries earns 48,000 points a year, which is far more than the $105 is worth.

In my opinion this is the best everyday card for a household that cooks and eats out, as long as you want points you’ll transfer to airlines. If you’d rather have cash, the Blue Cash Preferred is simpler, and the 1x outside food and flights means you’ll want another card for everything else.

In any case, I personally would hate to sign up at 100,000 points with an $8,000 spend requirement when a 2024 offer gave the same 100,000 plus 20% back at restaurants for $6,000.

The catch

The credits are drip-fed in $7 and $10 monthly pieces and only count if you already use those merchants; miss a month and it’s gone. Ignore them and the fee is $325 flat for a card that earns 1x outside groceries, dining and flights.

Supermarket 4x excludes Walmart, Target, Costco and other warehouse clubs, there’s no lounge access, and the travel insurance is thin: trip delay needs a 12-hour delay on a round trip paid with the card, and rental coverage is secondary.

The dining and Dunkin’ credits are truly bad unless you already spend there. Amex, like other banks with similar types of hard-to-use credits, hopes that you forget to use these benefits.

More on this:

Keep it after year one?

The fee to me is $325 minus the easy-to-use $120 Uber Cash and $100 Resy credit, which equals $105. If you spend at least a few hundred dollars a month at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, the extra points easily cover that, so I’d keep it. If you don’t, cancel before the second fee: it’s a charge card, and Amex’s no-fee cards are credit cards, which a charge card can’t be product-changed into.

Quick Answers

What is the Amex Gold annual fee?

$325 a year as of October 2026. It isn’t waived the first year. The first 5 Additional Cards have no fee; each one after that is $35.

What is the current Amex Gold bonus?

As of October 14, 2026 the public offer is as high as 100,000 Membership Rewards points after $8,000 in purchases in the first 6 months. Amex shows some applicants less.

Is the Amex Gold worth $325?

Think of it as about $105 after the $120 Uber Cash and $100 Resy credit, if you’d use them anyway. It’s worth it if you spend a few hundred dollars a month at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, where it earns 4x.

Does the Amex Gold earn 4x at Costco, Walmart or Target?

No. Amex doesn’t count superstores and warehouse clubs as U.S. supermarkets, so those purchases earn 1x.

Can I get the Gold bonus if I already have the Amex Platinum?

Usually not. The Gold’s terms say you may not be eligible if you have or have had a Platinum Card, so get the Gold first if you want both bonuses. Amex shows a pop-up before any credit pull if you aren’t eligible.
