Card benefits change often, and this page may be out of date by the time you read it. Always check the bank’s page and your card’s guide to benefits for the current terms before you rely on a benefit.

The Platinum Card is American Express’s premium charge card: an $895 annual fee, the biggest lounge network of any card I review, 5x on flights and prepaid Amex Travel hotels, Marriott and Hilton Gold status, and a very long list of monthly, quarterly, half-year and yearly credits.

Since the 2025 refresh it’s the biggest coupon book in the travel card world, and the credits only matter if they replace money you’d spend anyway. Below is every credit with how often it resets, whether it needs enrollment, and the catch, followed by the earning rates, the protections in Amex’s own numbers, and my verdict.

Amex Platinum at a glance

  • Annual fee: $895; $195 for each Additional Platinum Card; Companion Platinum Cards are free
  • Current public offer: As high as 175,000 Membership Rewards points after $12,000 in purchases in the first 6 months (as of October 14, 2026, per Doctor of Credit)
  • Is it the best ever?: No. The same 175,000 points needed only $8,000 in spend until February 2026, and “as high as” means Amex shows some applicants less, so check what you’re offered before you accept.
  • Foreign transaction fee: None
  • Best for: People who fly several times a year, will use the lounges, and already spend on Uber, streaming and travel incidentals so that several hundred dollars of the credits get used without changing their habits.
  • Skip it if: You’d have to sign up for Equinox, buy lululemon or book Fine Hotels + Resorts just to use the credits, or you want a card for everyday spending (it earns 1x outside flights and prepaid hotels).

How it earns

CategoryRateCaps and fine print
Flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel5xUp to $500,000 in these purchases per calendar year, then 1x.
Prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel5xPrepaid Amex Travel bookings only; hotels booked direct earn 1x.
Everything else1xNo bonus on dining, groceries or gas.

Membership Rewards are worth 1 cent each on flights booked with Pay with Points through Amex Travel and less on most other cash-like uses, so transferring them to airline partners is usually where the value is. The 1x on everyday spending is weak, which is why many people pair this card with a Gold.

Credits and how to use them

Amex markets more than $3,500 a year in value. Here’s what each piece takes. Enrollment means you turn the credit on in your Amex account (or app) before you spend; a purchase made before you enroll doesn’t count. Do the Uber credits stack? Yes: the $120 Uber One credit pays for the membership itself, and the $15 monthly Uber Cash is separate and can be spent on rides or Uber Eats orders on top of it (per Amex’s card page).

CreditAmountHow oftenWhere / howThe catch
Uber Cash$15 a month, $35 in December ($200 a year)MonthlyAdd the Platinum Card to your Uber account; U.S. rides and Uber Eats when you pay with an Amex cardEach month’s Uber Cash disappears if you don’t use it that month. Easy if you use Uber or Uber Eats at all.

Digital entertainment credit$25 a month ($300 a year)MonthlyDisney+ (and bundles), ESPN streaming, Hulu, Paramount+, Peacock, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal; enrollment requiredEasy if you already pay for one or two of these; worthless if you don’t.
Airline fee creditUp to $200Calendar yearIncidental fees (checked bags, in-flight food, change fees, lounge day passes) on the one qualifying airline you selectTickets don’t count, and credits can take up to 8 weeks. What still triggers it changes, so see the Frequent Miler link below.
Hotel credit (Fine Hotels + Resorts / The Hotel Collection)$300 + $300January–June and July–DecemberPrepaid FHR or Hotel Collection bookings through Amex Travel paid with the card; Hotel Collection needs a 2-night minimumThese are expensive hotels, so one night often costs more than the credit. It stacks with the booking’s own $100 property credit.
Resy credit$100 a quarter ($400 a year)QuarterlyEligible Resy purchases, including dining at 10,000+ U.S. Resy restaurants; enrollment requiredFairly easy if you live near Resy restaurants and eat out every quarter; hard in smaller towns.
CLEAR+ creditUp to $219Calendar yearPay for an auto-renewing CLEAR+ membership with the cardOnly useful if you fly from airports with CLEAR lanes; PreCheck alone is often enough.
Walmart+ creditUp to $12.95 a month plus tax ($155 a year)MonthlyPay for a monthly Walmart+ membership with the cardMust be the monthly plan, not annual.
lululemon credit$75 a quarter ($300 a year)QuarterlyU.S. lululemon stores (not outlets) and lululemon.com; enrollment requiredOnly if you already buy lululemon four times a year.
Equinox creditUp to $300Calendar yearEquinox club membership or Equinox+ digital subscription (auto-renewing); enrollment requiredAn Equinox club membership costs far more than $300, so for most people this is worth nothing.

Lounges, status and other perks

  • Top tier: the Global Lounge Collection, 1,550+ airport lounges, which Amex says is more than any other card company (the Sapphire Reserve and Venture X rely on Priority Pass’s 1,300+ plus their own lounges).
  • Amex Centurion Lounges: guests cost $50 per adult and $30 per child (3–17) unless you spend $75,000 in a calendar year, and since July 8, 2026 guests must be on the same flight as you at U.S. Centurion Lounges (per AwardWallet).
  • Priority Pass membership (enrollment required).
  • 10 Delta Sky Club visits a year when you’re flying an eligible Delta flight, plus other partner lounges.
  • Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite (room upgrades when available) and Hilton Honors Gold status (enrollment required; an 80% points bonus and a daily food and beverage credit at many U.S. Hilton brands).
  • What’s Leaders Club Sterling? It’s the entry status in The Leading Hotels of the World’s program, a group of independent luxury hotels; Amex lists a 5% points bonus and 5 pre-arrival upgrades a year (subject to availability). Enrollment required.
  • Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings through Amex Travel come with a guaranteed 4pm checkout, a room upgrade when available, a $100 property credit and daily breakfast for two; The Hotel Collection gives a $100 property credit on stays of 2+ nights.
  • Avis, Hertz and National premium rental status (enrollment required).
  • What’s Global Dining Access and Platinum Nights by Resy? Adding the card to your Resy profile unlocks reservations Resy holds back for Platinum members at popular U.S. restaurants, including select nights at top restaurants in select cities.
  • Platinum Travel Service (travel consultants who build itineraries), the Premium Global Assist Hotline for emergencies more than 100 miles from home, and Amex presale tickets and Premium Events Collection events.

Insurance and protections

BenefitWhat the bank says
Trip delayUp to $500 per trip after a delay of more than 6 hours, max 2 claims per card per 12 months (6 hours ties the shortest wait of the cards I review, but the round-trip rule makes it harder to use than Chase’s or Capital One’s)
One-way and award tickets: One-ways only as part of a round trip: Amex’s terms require round-trip travel paid entirely with the card; it can be made of one-way tickets, but a trip with no return isn’t covered. Award tickets: the terms let you pay with the card in combination with points or frequent flyer awards, so award taxes paid on the card should count (The Points Guy reads it the same way).
Trip cancellation / interruptionUp to $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per card per 12 months for non-refundable expenses
One-way and award tickets: Same rule: a round trip (one-way tickets are fine if you return to where you started), paid with the card alone or the card combined with points or frequent flyer awards; the terms don’t address award taxes directly, but The Points Guy says paying them on the Platinum should provide coverage.
Car rental loss and damageSecondary coverage for damage or theft when you decline the rental company’s CDW; not available in Australia, Italy or New Zealand, and no liability coverage
Cell phone protectionUp to $800 per claim, 2 claims per 12 months, $50 deductible, when the prior month’s wireless bill was paid with the card
Purchase protectionTheft, accidental damage or loss within 90 days, up to $10,000 per purchase and $50,000 per calendar year
Return protectionWithin 90 days if the store won’t take it back, up to $300 per item and $1,000 per calendar year (U.S. purchases)
Extended warrantyUp to one extra year on warranties of 5 years or less, up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 per year
Premium Global Assist Hotline24/7 emergency coordination and referrals more than 100 miles from home; emergency medical transportation at no cost only if the hotline approves and arranges it

Amex’s card page no longer lists baggage insurance, so I’ve left it out. The round-trip and award-ticket rules come from Amex’s own trip delay and trip cancellation terms (coverage is provided by New Hampshire Insurance Company, an AIG company) and The Points Guy’s reading of them.

For how this compares with other cards, see my card travel benefits comparison.

Transfer partners

Membership Rewards transfer to 20 airline and hotel partners, including ANA, Air Canada Aeroplan, Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and Delta, with frequent transfer bonuses; the hotel partners are weak, so I treat Amex points as a flights currency. Ratios and transfer times for every partner are in my transfer partners guide.

Application rules for this card

  • The bonus is generally once per lifetime on this card: Amex’s terms say you may not be eligible if you have or have had this card or its Charles Schwab or Morgan Stanley versions (the Amex lifetime rule). Amex shows a pop-up before any hard pull if you’re not eligible, so you can withdraw without a credit inquiry.
  • Order matters if you also want the Gold: the Gold’s terms block its bonus if you have or have had a Platinum, so get the Gold first. Having a Gold doesn’t block the Platinum’s bonus.
  • The Platinum is a charge card, so it doesn’t count toward Amex’s limit of 5 credit cards or the 1-credit-card-every-5-days and 2-every-90-days limits (Amex rules).

The full rules for every bank are in my credit card application rules guide.

My take

An $895 fee, but in my eyes the real fee is lower if you already use Uber and pay for a streaming service: $200 of Uber Cash and $300 of the entertainment credit are about as easy as these get, which brings it to $395. If you also fly enough to use the airline fee credit and eat at Resy restaurants every quarter, it can drop to roughly zero, but those two take effort.

Where it still wins: no card I review has a bigger lounge network, it’s the only one of them that comes with both Marriott and Hilton Gold status, and Membership Rewards have some of the best airline partners for business class. If you fly a few times a year and will use the lounges, it can pay for itself; if you won’t, it’s an $895 mistake.

The 1x on everyday spending is poor, so this is a card for travel perks and the bonus, not for daily use.

In any case, I personally would hate to sign up at 175,000 points with a $12,000 spend requirement when the same 175,000 needed only $8,000 earlier this year.

The catch

This is a coupon book, and after the 2025 refresh an even bigger one. The credits come monthly, quarterly or by half-year and expire if unused, so the real value is only what you’d have spent anyway: a $25 streaming credit is worth $25 only if you already pay for those services, and the Equinox, lululemon and Oura credits are worth nothing to most people.

The $600 hotel credit needs two prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or Hotel Collection stays a year at expensive hotels. The airline fee credit covers incidentals only, not tickets; one trick is to buy a cheap ticket on an airline that lets you cancel into a travel credit (Southwest, Alaska) and cancel after 24 hours so the value stays with the airline instead of refunding to the card, and Frequent Miler keeps a list of what still triggers the credit.

Centurion Lounge guests are no longer free, the trip insurance requires a round trip on the card, and rental car coverage is only secondary.

Everything I just mentioned is truly bad unless you already spend in these categories. Amex, like other banks with similar types of hard-to-use credits, hopes that you forget to use these benefits.

More on this:

Keep it after year one?

The fee to me is $895 minus the easy-to-use $200 Uber Cash and $300 entertainment credit, which equals $395. Only if you fly a few times a year, will use the lounges, and can honestly use at least $600–700 of the credits without changing how you spend would I keep it. Everyone else should earn the bonus and then either cancel before the second fee or ask Amex to move them to a cheaper card in the same family, such as the Gold or Green, keeping in mind that a product change uses up that card’s future bonus.

Quick Answers

What is the Amex Platinum annual fee?

$895 a year for the basic card as of October 2026, plus $195 for each Additional Platinum Card; Companion Platinum Cards are free. It isn’t waived the first year.

What is the current Amex Platinum bonus?

As of October 14, 2026 the public offer is as high as 175,000 Membership Rewards points after $12,000 in purchases in the first 6 months. Amex shows some applicants less, and the same 175,000 needed only $8,000 until February 2026.

Is the Amex Platinum worth $895?

Think of it as about $395 after the $200 Uber Cash and $300 streaming credit, if you’d use those anyway. It’s worth it if you’ll use the lounges and enough of the other credits (airline fees, Resy, hotels, CLEAR) without changing your habits; otherwise it isn’t.

Does the Amex Platinum trip delay insurance cover one-way and award tickets?

Only as part of a round trip: Amex requires round-trip travel paid with the card, though it can be made of one-way tickets. The terms allow paying with the card combined with points or frequent flyer awards, so award taxes paid on the card should count.

Can I bring guests into Centurion Lounges with the Platinum?

Not for free. Guests cost $50 per adult and $30 per child aged 3 to 17 unless you spend $75,000 in a calendar year, and since July 8, 2026 guests at U.S. Centurion Lounges must be on your flight.
