The Virgin Red Rewards Mastercard, issued by Synchrony, earns Virgin Points: a $99 annual fee, 3x on Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Hotels and Virgin Voyages, 2x on groceries, dining, streaming and EV charging, 5,000 points every renewal, and a companion voucher or upgrade once you spend $15,000 in a year.
Virgin Points are a transfer partner of most of the big U.S. banks, so this card mostly makes sense for the perks the transfers can’t buy. Below is how it earns, what the Personal Perks actually take, how to find the offer, and my verdict.
Virgin Red card at a glance
- Annual fee: $99
- Current public offer: 60,000 points after $4,000 in purchases in the first 3 months, plus a statement credit (Doctor of Credit’s best-bonuses list says $200; its offer post says it was cut to $100 on February 28, 2026). There’s no direct link: it shows up when you start a Virgin Atlantic booking. (as of October 14, 2026, per Doctor of Credit)
- Is it the best ever?: No. It was 75,000 points for short windows in 2025 (in September and again on December 2–3, per Doctor of Credit), so if you’re not in a hurry it may be worth waiting for that to come back.
- Foreign transaction fee: None
- Best for: Virgin Atlantic flyers who’d put $15,000 a year on the card for the companion voucher or upgrade, or who stay at Virgin Hotels.
- Skip it if: You just want Virgin Points. You can transfer them from Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One, Bilt or Wells Fargo instead.

How it earns
| Category | Rate | Caps and fine print |
|---|---|---|
| Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Hotels and Virgin Voyages | 3x | No cap. Other airlines and hotels earn 1x. |
| Grocery stores and dining | 2x | No cap. |
| Select streaming services | 2x | Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Max, Spotify, YouTube TV, Peacock and others on Synchrony’s list. |
| EV charging | 2x | Parking lots, meters and garages don’t count. |
| Everything else | 1x | — |
Virgin Points don’t expire. They’re worth the most on Virgin Atlantic awards and partner flights booked through Flying Club, and Virgin’s award taxes and surcharges can be high on its own flights out of London.
Credits and how to use them
There are no statement credits on this card. These are the perks with a real value attached, and most of them need either big spend or a Virgin trip.
| Credit | Amount | How often | Where / how | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renewal bonus | 5,000 points | Each year the account renews | Automatic; posts within 1–2 statements | Worth roughly $65 in my eyes. The only automatic perk. |
| Virgin Atlantic companion seat or upgrade | Up to 75,000 points of award value (150,000 for Silver and Gold members) | After $15,000 in a cardholder year (two perks at $30,000) | Choose it in your Virgin Red account; book by phone with Flying Club | Round trip, Virgin Atlantic-operated flights only, and taxes and surcharges are extra. Valid 24 months. Big spend for one perk. |
| Virgin Hotels free night or suite upgrade | One night in a Chamber King, or a suite for up to 3 nights | Alternative choice of Personal Perk | Redeem on virginhotels.com (The Know membership required) | Only a handful of Virgin Hotels exist in the U.S. and U.K.; fees extra. |
| Virgin Voyages bar tab or Blue Extras | $300 bar tab (7+ night cruise) or $150 (shorter) | Alternative choice of Personal Perk | Applied to an existing cruise booking | Only if you’d sail with Virgin Voyages anyway. |
| Virgin Hotels third night free | One night | Once each cardholder year | Book a new two-night stay directly on virginhotels.com | Taxes and destination fees on the free night are extra. |
Other perks
- What are Tier Points? They’re how you earn Virgin Atlantic Flying Club status (Silver and Gold). The card gives 25 Tier Points when you spend $2,500 in a monthly statement, or 50 at $5,000, and they expire 12 months after they post.
- 2,500 bonus points for each additional cardholder you add, up to 10,000 points.
- World Elite Mastercard benefits: concierge, Mastercard Priceless experiences, Mastercard Global Service and ID Theft Protection (registration required).
- A free TransUnion credit score in your online account.
- The card is only available to Virgin Red members 18 or older with a U.S. address.
Insurance and protections
| Benefit | What the bank says |
|---|---|
| Trip delay, cancellation and baggage coverage | None listed on Synchrony’s card pages |
| Auto rental collision damage waiver | None listed |
| Cell phone protection | None listed |
| ID theft protection | Mastercard ID Theft Protection (registration required) |
Synchrony’s pages list only the Mastercard services above, so I wouldn’t count on any travel insurance from this card.

Transfer partners
Virgin Points earned on this card go into your Virgin Red account and can be moved to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, where they’re used for Virgin Atlantic and partner awards. Virgin Points are also a transfer partner of most of the big U.S. banks; ratios and transfer times are in my transfer partners guide.
Application rules for this card
- Synchrony doesn’t publish a once-per-lifetime or 24-month rule for this card’s bonus, and I couldn’t confirm one. The offer only appears when you start a Virgin Atlantic booking; there’s no direct application link with it.
- It’s a Mastercard, so it counts toward Chase’s 5/24 rule like any other personal card.
- Synchrony is known for closing accounts that are in good standing, so use the card now and then if you keep it (details).
The full rules for every bank are in my credit card application rules guide.
My take
A $99 fee, but the 5,000 renewal points are worth about $65 in my eyes, which makes it more like a $35 card. That’s cheap, but there’s nothing else automatic: the companion voucher needs $15,000 a year in spend that would earn more on almost any other card, and the hotel perks need a trip to one of a handful of Virgin Hotels.
The bonus is decent, and Synchrony is generally an easier approval than the big banks. But Virgin Points are a transfer partner of Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One, Bilt and Wells Fargo, so most people can get them more easily by transferring.
In any case, I personally would hate to sign up at 60,000 when 75,000 was available in the past.
The catch
The offer is hidden: you have to start a dummy Virgin Atlantic booking to see it, and Doctor of Credit’s own post and best-bonuses list disagree on whether the statement credit is $100 or $200. Synchrony’s customer service is bare-bones compared with the big banks, and there’s no travel insurance at all.
The Personal Perks need $15,000 a year in spend and the hotel perks need a Virgin trip, so they only help if you already spend that much or travel Virgin, and Synchrony, like other banks with spend-gated perks, is counting on most people never reaching them.
Keep it after year one?
The fee to me is $99 minus the 5,000 renewal points (about $65), so around $35 a year. Keep it only if you’ll hit $15,000 for the companion voucher or use the Virgin Hotels third night; otherwise I’d cancel it, since Virgin Points are easy to get by transfer. I haven’t confirmed a no-fee version to downgrade to.

Quick Answers
$99 a year as of October 2026 (Synchrony’s card page), and it isn’t waived the first year.
As of October 14, 2026 it’s 60,000 points after $4,000 in purchases in 3 months plus a statement credit, which Doctor of Credit lists as $200 on its best-bonuses page but says was cut to $100 in February 2026. It has been 75,000 points before.
There’s no direct link. Start a Virgin Atlantic flight booking and the card offer appears during checkout.
Spend $15,000 in a cardholder year and choose it as your Personal Perk. It covers a round-trip companion reward seat on Virgin Atlantic up to 75,000 points (150,000 for Silver and Gold members), and you pay the taxes and surcharges.
No. Synchrony’s page says Virgin Points don’t expire.
